Flyers Beat Bruins in OT, Bust Penguins Streak, Lead NHL

The Flyers are flying high right now after charging into a week of “measuring-stick” games against other top clubs and winning all of them. Mike Richards scored with three seconds left in overtime against Boston’s awesome Tim Thomas, lifting the Flyers to victory. They followed that up on Tuesday by breaking the arch-rival Penguins’ 12 game winning streak with a 3-2 win, then beat the Canadiens in Montreal by a 5-3 margin, coming back to win late after the Habs tied the game. The Flyers now lead the NHL in points. Their game looks the strongest it’s been in recent memory. Goal production leads the league, they have balanced scoring, the defense is solid, and both rookie Sergei Bobrovsky and back-up Brian Boucher have been superlative in goal.

The lines look like their are getting some continuity as the Briere-Hartnell-Leino line has stayed in tact for the entire season and is producing. Last couple of games, Carter has moved back to center with Zherdev and van Riemsdyk, and that line produced well, with Carter and Zherdev each netting a goal and JVR scoring two against Montreal. He has seven goals in his last 12 games and is starting to look like the player the Flyers had hoped for when they drafted him. Maybe he’s not going to be the bust that I thought he was.

This time last year they had lost ten in a row and fired their coach. Laviolette has them playing with a scary efficiency, destructing everything in their path right now. Definitely a good time to be a Flyers’ fan!
