Michael Leighton celebrates after the win

Simon Gagne gets one past Jaroslav Halak

Goalie Michael Leighton led the Flyers to a second consecutive shutout of the Canadiens, this time 3-0, to take a two games to none lead in the series. The Flyers were not as sharp as they were in Game 1, yet they scored two power play goals and Leighton stopped all 30 shots he faced for the win. Simon Gagne scored in his sixth consecutive game, Danny Briere continued his hot play with a goal, and Ville Leino continued to show his skill with a goal and an assist. He also led the Flyers with five scoring chances. The Flyers connected twice on the power play and, although they were outshot, kept Montreal boxed out wide so that most of their shots were from the perimeter. The smaller Canadiens can’t keep the Flyers away from their goal and can’t get to the Flyers net. Goalie Jaroslav Halak gave up a soft third period goal to Leino and the Habs appeared to quit after that. Going home to the Bell Centre, the Canadiens will try to even the series by using speed to create scoring chances, but thus far have been unable to generate much at all. A split up there should put the Flyers well in command.

(Leighton’s two shutouts in Games 1 and 2 are the first time that a Flyers’ goalie registered two consecutive shutouts in the playoffs since Bernie Parent blanked Toronto in Games 1 and 2 of the 1975 Quarterfinals. The Flyers won the Cup that year).
